Stephen J. Squeri is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express, a leading, globally integrated payments company and one of the world’s most admired brands. Since becoming Chairman and CEO in February 2018, Steve has been executing an enterprise-wide strategy focused on delivering sustainable, long-term growth by strategically investing in the company’s colleagues, customers and brand.
Under Steve’s leadership, American Express has launched innovative new payment, financial management and lifestyle services, expanded strategic partnerships, enhanced its digital capabilities, repositioned its international organization to seize on growth opportunities, and expanded its merchant network globally. The company’s investments have helped drive generational relevance with consumers, including Millennial and Gen Z customers, and expand its offerings for small and medium-sized enterprises. Steve’s commitment to backing customers, colleagues and communities has enabled the company to successfully navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and introduce an ambitious new long-term growth plan in January 2022.
Prior to becoming Chairman and CEO, Steve served as Vice Chairman of American Express from 2015 until 2018, during which he led the company’s enterprise-wide shared services functions and consolidated the company’s commercial services business. Previously, he held a variety of senior roles across the company, including Group President of Global Corporate Services, Chief Information Officer, President of the Global Commercial Card business, and President of Establishment Services in the U.S. and Canada. Steve joined American Express in 1985 as a manager of the Travelers Cheque Group.
Steve is a member of the Business Roundtable, where he chairs the Corporate Governance Committee, as well as The Business Council and the American Society of Corporate Executives. He also sits on the Board of Trustees of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and The Valerie Fund.
A native of Queens, NY, Steve is deeply committed to advancing opportunities for education and economic development in local communities. He serves on the boards of both his alma maters, as Chair of the Board of Trustees at Manhattan College and member of the Board of Governors at Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School.
Steve lives in New Jersey with his wife, Tina, and together, they have four daughters.
