Organization Announcement: American Express

February 27, 2019

The following announcement is based on an internal note to American Express (NYSE: AXP) employees from Stephen J. Squeri, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer:

I am very pleased to announce that Monique Herena will be joining American Express as our new Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), effective April 1. Monique will report to me and become a member of our Executive Committee. In addition, I expect she will be elected an officer of the company by our Board of Directors when she officially joins us. As CHRO, Monique will be responsible for all aspects of our human resources strategy, including talent management, leadership development and compensation and benefits, as well as leading all human resources functions globally. She will work closely with the Executive Committee and me to ensure we continue to build a culture that attracts, retains and develops the best team.

Monique joins us from BNY Mellon, where she was CHRO and Senior Executive Vice President, Human Resources, Marketing and Communications since 2014. While there, she worked closely with the CEO and senior management team to lead the development and execution of a business and culture transformation strategy that has made the bank more competitive in the market for talent. Prior to BNY Mellon, Monique was at PepsiCo for 13 years where she served in a number of increasingly senior HR leadership roles, including assignments in Dubai and Chicago, as well as in their Purchase, NY headquarters. Her career also included several years at both Honeywell and The Quaker Oats Company, where she held leadership roles in a wide range of HR disciplines. Monique succeeds Kevin Cox, who recently left the company. Kevin’s former direct reports will now report to her.

Monique devotes a good deal of her time outside of work as a coach and mentor to other HR professionals who seek to develop successful careers in Human Resources. She graduated from University of Wisconsin - Parkside in 1993 with a B.A. in Communications and holds two Masters of Arts degrees, one in Communications Studies from Northern Illinois University and one in Organization Psychology and Change Leadership from Columbia University. Monique sits on both the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the Human Resources Policy Association, a leading professional organization. She is also a Board member of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York and co-leads their Strategic Development Committee.

We have an outstanding Human Resources team whose energy, commitment and creativity are helping us demonstrate how we have our colleagues’ backs by delivering on the commitments in our Colleague Value Proposition. I especially want to thank Robert Childs and David Kasiarz for leading the group following Kevin’s departure, as well as the entire team for their continued dedication and support. Monique’s experience and her demonstrated track record in leading with an enterprise first mindset, along with her integrity and candor, make her a great fit for us. I know she will be a terrific leader for our team as we work together to bring our Framework for Winning to life across the company.

Please join me in welcoming Monique to American Express.
